Russia has proposed holding the next round of direct peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on 2nd June. The aim is for a sustainable settlement.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced the proposal on 28th May; Ukraine has not yet responded.
Earlier this month, Russian and Ukrainian delegates met in Istanbul for the first time since March 2022. However, the 16th May talks ended without a ceasefire deal.
The Putin led Russia insists certain conditions must be met for a ceasefire, while Kyiv and Western allies continue to push for one.
After a call with Donald Trump on 19th May, Putin expressed willingness to work with Ukraine. He wants to create a peace accord memorandum.
Russia’s peace talk envoy Medinsky said both sides would prepare documents. They will exchange these documents outlining their ceasefire terms at the 2nd June meeting.
