SC Directs Telecom Firms to Deposit AGR Dues by March 17

The Supreme Court has directed telecom providers who have to owe the government Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) payments to deposit their dues by March 17. A bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, Abdul Nazeer and M R Shah had assembled to hear a batch of fresh petitions filed by telecom companies seeking more time for payment of AGR dues. The apex court rejected the plea by mobile carriers seeking more time to settle back-fees and began contempt proceedings against the companies.
Reliance Jio is so far the only service provider to have cleared its AGR dues amounting to Rs 195 crore. While Vodafone-Idea and Airtel owe a reported sum of Rs 1.47 lakh crore to the Department of Telecom.
