The BSE Sensex rose 156 points, while the Nifty closed above 17,300 on Thursday after metals, IT and capital goods stocks rose on foreign capital inflows.

Gaining for a second straight session, the 30-share BSE benchmark was up 0.27% at 58,222.10. The index rose 513.29 points, or 0.88%, to hit a session high of 58,578.76 after opening higher, with metals, FMCG, IT and oil stocks gaining.

However, profits at some banks and Teck pared gains at the close. The broader NSE Nifty gained 57.50 points or 0.33% to 17,331.80, with 27 shares closing in the green. Among Sensex stocks, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, ICICI Bank, HCL Technologies, Infosys and Axis Bank were among the winners.
