Union Minister Jitendra Singh informed the Lok Sabha that space-based inputs are being widely utilised to support key government schemes. These include Digital India, Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, PM GatiShakti, and agricultural forecasting.
He said initiatives such as the Bhuvan Geoportal, Aadhaar enrolment centre mapping, geocoded postal addresses, and rooftop solar potential assessment have aided the Digital India and Smart Cities projects.
Under the FASAL programme, satellite data is used to assess crop acreage and forecast production for 11 crops. In comparison, the CHAMAN programme estimates horticulture output for seven crops and plans for infrastructure and area expansion.
Space-based tools are also used for monitoring MGNREGA asset creation, PMKSY-WDC watershed projects, and PMGSY rural roads. Furthermore, these tools help in crop loss assessment under PMFBY and in urban geospatial databases for AMRUT cities.
Singh added that the Department of Space plans to establish a Global Space Institute (GSpI). This institute will offer advanced education in space technology, policy, and exploration. It will also promote space entrepreneurship and private sector participation.
The institute will collaborate with top academic institutions, industries, and government bodies to drive innovation and strengthen Indiaβs space economy.
