Sri Lanka PM Confirms President Rajapaksa to Resign

Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he will resign as previously announced, the Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s Office said today.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will resign following the most dramatic day of months-long unrest as protesters storm leaders’ homes amid the economic crisis.

A parliament spokesman said Rajapaksa would resign on Wednesday after thousands of protesters stormed the presidential palace.

Wickremesinghe also announced that he would resign as soon as the new government was formed. Opposition parties met on Sunday to discuss forming a new government. Opposition United People’s Force leader Ranjith Madduma Bandara said separate discussions had been held with other parties and lawmakers who had broken away from Rajapaksa’s ruling coalition, and more meetings were planned.

Meanwhile, anti-government protest leaders said on Sunday that protesters would continue to occupy the official residences of the president and prime minister until the two resign.
