India has approved Starlink’s entry into the satellite internet market, granting it a 5-year licence to operate its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network.
The satellite network comprises 4,408 satellites, capable of delivering internet speeds of up to 600 Gbps across India.
The government is finalising spectrum allocation rules, expected in 4β6 weeks, with a likely first-come, first-served model for satellite operators.
Starlink joins Jio Satellite and Eutelsat OneWeb, which also hold licenses but are waiting for spectrum to launch commercial services. The DoT is drafting guidelines based on TRAI’s pricing and allocation recommendations to facilitate spectrum distribution.
Starlink has partnered with Jio and Airtel, aligning with major telecom firms to support its rollout in the Indian market.
