Su-57 Jet Sale to India on Agenda for Modi-Putin Talks

India hasn't officially responded to Peskov's comments yet.

The Kremlin has confirmed that the sale of Russia’s Su-57 fighter jets to India is on the agenda for talks between PM Modi and President Putin.

Here’s the context. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to hold a bilateral meeting on Friday, 11 September, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

According to Peskov, this Su-57 discussion will be part of the broader bilateral agenda between the two leaders, alongside talks on trade and economic cooperation.

It’s Russia’s advanced stealth multirole fighter jet, considered one of the more sophisticated aircraft in its current lineup.

India hasn’t officially responded to Peskov’s comments yet. This isn’t a completely new topic either.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, India’s state-owned aerospace and defence manufacturer, has a long history of partnering with Russia on the procurement and licensed production of military aircraft for the Indian armed forces.

Given that track record, HAL is expected to play a role if this deal moves forward. The BRICS Summit itself is a significant event this year.

India holds the BRICS presidency for 2026, its fourth time chairing the grouping, and this edition, the 18th summit, will be hosted at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September.

Along with Putin, other world leaders including China’s Xi Jinping, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, and several others are expected to attend.

Modi and Putin last met in person on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, their first face to face meeting since the annual India-Russia Summit held in New Delhi last December.

During that meeting, Modi had spoken about the importance of moving toward peace and away from prolonged conflict.

Separately, Peskov also criticised the United States’ proposed plan to impose 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian crude oil, calling the move illegal and unacceptable.
