Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank Invests in One Planet Partners

Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank
The partnership will help Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank identify investment opportunities.

Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank has invested in Indian private equity firm One Planet Partners to expand its exposure to India’s growing energy transition and manufacturing sectors.

The partnership also includes plans to establish a dedicated investment account managed by One Planet Partners. Founded in Mumbai in 2024, One Planet Partners focuses on investing in established Indian businesses with strong growth potential.

The firm aims to support companies benefiting from India’s shift towards cleaner energy, rising energy security needs and the government’s Make in India initiative.

The partnership will help Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank identify investment opportunities in businesses that could benefit from long term economic and industrial growth. Key areas of interest include clean energy, manufacturing and mobility.

India’s push to expand renewable energy, strengthen domestic production and reduce dependence on imported resources has created opportunities for businesses and investors. Companies operating in these areas may need additional funding to expand production, improve technology and reach new markets.

The dedicated investment account, known as a Separately Managed Account, will allow One Planet Partners to manage investments according to an agreed strategy for the Japanese bank.

The investment highlights continued interest from international financial institutions in India’s private equity market. Such partnerships can help growing businesses access capital and support their expansion plans.

One Planet Partners was founded by professionals with experience across the Tata Group, McKinsey, Blackstone and the private equity industry. Its leadership team brings experience in business management, investment and company growth.

For Indian businesses, the partnership could create additional funding opportunities, particularly in sectors linked to energy security, cleaner technology and domestic manufacturing.

The long term impact will depend on how effectively the investment account identifies promising companies and supports their growth. However, the partnership reflects the increasing role of international investors in financing India’s industrial development.
