TEC to Address Social, Legal Issues in AI, ML

Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) has started discussions to create a framework for a fair assessment of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems to build public trust. The technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has invited inputs from the public by 8th March to develop the framework to resolve different ethical, social and legal issues that can arise from AI and ML systems. TEC said AI and ML applications are being used in healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, smart homes, finance, defence, transport, logistics, natural language processing, surveillance, etc.

“To build public trust in AI and ML Systems, TEC is working on Voluntary Fairness Assessment of AI and ML Systems. And it is initiating stakeholder talks and has invited recommendations for framing procedures for assessing fairness for different types of AI and ML Systems,” TEC said in a statement. Several government organisations are also using AI and ML systems for delivering public services, and e-governance and preference in AI and ML systems raise diverse ethical, social and legal issues, it added.
