Tesla will begin robotaxi rides in Austin on 22nd June. Initially, they will start with 10–20 Model Y cars under remote supervision in a designated area.
The service will first be offered to Tesla employees, with public access to follow. Musk noted the launch date may shift for safety reasons.
From 28th June, Tesla cars will begin driving themselves from the factory to customer homes. Notably, there will be no one behind the wheel during these journeys.
Tesla has tested its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system on Austin roads. Recently, one robotaxi was seen navigating traffic without a driver.
Musk plans to scale up operations to over 1,000 robotaxis in a few months. Furthermore, he aims for 1 million by end-2026, shifting Tesla’s focus to autonomous driving.
While self-driving tech could reduce accidents and traffic, regulatory hurdles and safety concerns remain key challenges.
