The Tamil Nadu government has permanently revoked the manufacturing license of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the company responsible for the contaminated cough syrup Coldrif. They have also ordered the firm to shut down its operations. This move is part of a broader effort to tighten oversight of drug manufacturing in the state.

According to the official announcement, authorities have issued orders for a comprehensive inspection of other drug manufacturing units across Tamil Nadu. This is to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Investigations by the state’s Drug Control Department revealed alarming findings. Coldrif contained 48.6% Diethylene Glycol (DEG), a toxic chemical linked to the deaths of several children in Madhya Pradesh. The inspections also revealed that Sresan Pharmaceuticals had failed to adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Over 300 major and critical violations were documented.

The company’s owner, G Ranganathan, was recently arrested by a special investigation team from Madhya Pradesh. In addition, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on the company’s premises. This included the residences of certain officials in connection with a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case.

This decisive action underscores the government’s commitment to strict regulation in the pharmaceutical sector. It focuses on protecting public health following one of the deadliest incidents of drug contamination in recent years.
