Tokyo Olympic Village Sees First Case of Covid-19

The Tokyo Olympics had recorded its first Coronavirus case in the Olympic Village 6 days before the Games started, organisers said. “There was one person in the village. That was the very first case detected of coronavirus in the village, which was reported during the screening test,” Masa Takaya, Spokesman for the Tokyo organising committee, said in a press conference.

The infected person has been removed from the village. Thousands of athletes and officials will stay in the town during the Games. “Right now, this person is limited to a hotel,” Takaya said.

Seiko Hashimoto, the Chief Organiser of the Tokyo 2020 Games, said: “We are doing everything to block any Covid outbreaks. If we end up with an outbreak, we will make sure we have a plan in place to respond.” At an Olympics that has already been delayed by a year because of the pandemic, organisers have put in several measures to avoid coronavirus infections in the village.
