Hurricane Iona and Tropical Storm Keli are spinning southeast of Hawaii. However, they are not expected to directly impact the islands, according to the National Weather Service.

Iona, the first hurricane of the central Pacific season, quickly intensified from a tropical depression to a Category 1 storm on 27th July. Located approximately 1,303 km southeast of Honolulu, it has maximum sustained winds of 137 km/h. It is moving west at 21 km/h. It is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane by 29th July before weakening midweek.

While no coastal warnings are in place, forecasters warn of dry, breezy conditions caused by downward pressure from Iona. This is similar to Hurricane Dora in 2023, which worsened Maui’s deadly wildfires. Winds could reach localised gusts above 64 kmph. However, they are not expected to match Dora’s intensity.

Tropical Storm Keli, with winds of 65 kmph, is about 1,658 km southeast of Honolulu and is also moving west. It may briefly strengthen but will likely weaken midweek, posing no direct threat.

Officials are monitoring the situation, with Hawaii’s emergency management agency coordinating updates across the state. Small westward swells from the storms are expected. Meanwhile, a separate large swell from east of New Zealand is forecast to hit south-facing shores by Thursday. This may prompt a likely high surf advisory with waves over 10 feet.
