The Republican-led House rejected a temporary funding plan backed by President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday, just 24 hours before a potential US government shutdown.

Trump and adviser Elon Musk pressured GOP lawmakers to reject a bipartisan deal, demanding a provision on raising or waiving the federal debt limit before Trump’s inauguration.

The funding bill failed by 235-174 votes, with 38 Republicans opposing it. Most Democrats also voted against it, which would have suspended the debt ceiling for two years.

House Speaker Mike Johnson pledged to find another solution after the vote, while Musk blamed Democrats for the bill’s failure.

The White House called the bill a “giveaway for billionaires,” and Democrats criticised it as driven by extreme MAGA Republicans.

Without action, government funding will lapse on Friday night, with the Trump-backed plan setting a 14th March funding deadline.

Some Republicans, including Representative Chip Roy, opposed the bill, criticising the extension of the debt ceiling and the potential $5 trillion debt increase.

Trump backed Musk’s objections and urged lawmakers to reject the bill on social media.
