During a meeting in Doha, President Trump said India has offered a trade deal with “basically zero tariffs” on U.S. goods.
Trump called it “very hard to sell in India” but said the new offer could remove most tariff barriers.
The U.S. and India aim to finalise the deal before a 90-day U.S. tariff freeze on Indian exports ends on 9th July.
India reportedly proposed cutting its average tariff difference with the U.S. to below 4% from the current 13%.
According to officials, India also offered to remove duties on 60% of tariff lines in the deal’s first phase.
The U.S. had earlier imposed steep tariffs on imports from 60 countries, including a 26% duty on Indian goods, but paused tariffs on India from 10th April to support trade talks.
