Trump Weighs 90-Day US Diesel Export Ban, Europe Uneasy

The US weighs a 90-day diesel export ban, alarming Europe, while India faces a potential 100% tariff threat over Russian oil purchases.

The plan would stop US diesel leaving the country for 90 days, just before the midterm elections on 3 November.

Trump told a Fox News reporter on Sunday that his team was thinking about it very seriously. No timeframe or details have been shared.

Fuel prices are the pressure point. Motorist group AAA puts the average US diesel price at $6.52 a gallon, up at least 76% from a year ago.

That worries Republicans trying to keep control of Congress. Not everyone in the administration agrees.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said a curb would not work and could push up petrol and jet fuel prices.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum warned that fuel-exporting countries could hit back. Europe leans heavily on that supply.

Kpler data shows the US sent about 420,000 barrels of diesel to EU countries and the UK last month, more than half of their monthly imports, and diesel stocks there sit at a record low with winter demand close.

The European Commission said it views the reports with concern. Ireland’s Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien doubted it would happen.

India sits in the middle. Vortexa data showed Indian supply made up 60% of the diesel passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb route in August.

Then there is the tariff law. Days ago, Trump signed the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act.

It lets him put tariffs of up to 100% on buyers of Russian oil, and he decides which countries face them, at what rates, and with which waivers.

The rules are due to start within 30 days of signing. India’s foreign ministry said the country stays committed to energy security through diversified sourcing.

Its Russian crude imports hit 2.6 million barrels a day in June and fell 16.5% in August to about 2.1 million, and early Kpler data suggests they could slip to 1.9 million in September. Nothing is final on either front.
