The US will not conduct nuclear explosions as part of its upcoming weapons tests. Energy Secretary Chris Wright clarified this on 2nd November. His remarks came after President Donald Trump’s announcement last week sparked confusion. People were unsure whether the US planned to resume nuclear detonation tests for the first time since 1992.

Wright explained that the upcoming tests will focus on non-explosive “system tests.” These ensure the functionality of nuclear weapons without triggering actual detonations. “These are not nuclear explosions,” he said. “They test all other parts of a nuclear weapon to ensure proper setup and geometry.”

Trump’s earlier statement on social media said he had “instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis.” This raised global concerns. The post came just before he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. This led to speculation about a potential shift in US nuclear policy.

When asked later whether he planned to resume underground nuclear detonations, Trump avoided a direct answer. He said, “You’ll find out very soon.”

The US has not conducted a nuclear explosion since 1992, though it routinely tests missile systems capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Washington continues to observe the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which prohibits explosive testing. This rule was violated only by North Korea in recent decades.

Trump’s statement followed Russia’s announcement of tests for a nuclear-powered drone and cruise missile. While the Kremlin maintained that it has respected the global ban on nuclear testing, it warned that any US move to resume tests would prompt a similar response. This could risk a new wave of Cold War-style tensions.
