Typhoon Maysak Hits South Korea with Flooding and Damaging Winds

A powerful typhoon churned across South Korea’s southern and eastern coasts, knocking out more than 270,000 homes and more than 2,000 people evacuated to temporary shelters with leaving at least one person dead, said authorities.

South Korea’s weather agency said Typhoon Maysak was offshore east of Sokcho with the wind blowing up at a speed of 126km/h (78 miles per hour) on Thursday, and it is expected that Maysak will weaken within hours to a tropical storm.

Due to the typhoon, More than 2,400 South Koreans were evacuated from their homes, and dozens of homes and vehicles are damaged, and signboards are ripped off. In the southern city of Busan, a woman died after getting injured by shattered window glass. South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety said that Four nuclear power reactors near Busan were automatically shut down because of the issue of electricity supply and added that no leak of radioactive materials was detected.

Typhoon Maysak is heading towards North Korea and in concert with that North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency had reported that officials are working to minimize damage from Maysak, which was forecasted that in the afternoon Maysak would make landfall in the country’s northeastern region.

On Tuesday, Maysak has minorly damaged the Japanese island of Okinawa and is the second typhoon in many weeks which is hitting the Korean Peninsula Region.
