The United Kingdom (UK) has signed a growth partnership with Maharashtra to strengthen trade, investment and job creation following the implementation of the India-UK free trade agreement.

A UK delegation comprising three Cabinet ministers, seven mayors and around 200 businesses, universities and organisations is visiting India to expand commercial ties. The visit is expected to generate more than £1 billion in new deals.

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which came into force in July 2026, aims to reduce trade barriers and improve market access for businesses in both countries. The agreement is expected to increase annual bilateral trade by around £25 billion over the long term.

The delegation aims to convert these opportunities into commercial contracts, investments and employment.

The discussions cover advanced manufacturing, life sciences, financial services, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital technology and advanced materials.

Regional representatives are also exploring partnerships between businesses, universities and local authorities. Greater Manchester is seeking closer ties with Indian companies and educational institutions, while the North East of England is focusing on green industries, clean energy and innovative materials.

These engagements could help Indian companies expand into the UK while attracting British investment into India.

Maharashtra’s business ecosystem, infrastructure and financial services sector make it an important destination for UK companies. The partnership aims to strengthen regional cooperation and translate the trade agreement into practical business opportunities.

The initiative could benefit Indian exporters, manufacturers and technology companies by improving access to UK markets. British businesses may also find new investment opportunities in India.

However, the long-term impact will depend on whether discussions lead to actual contracts, sustained investment and job creation.
