A US military transport aircraft carrying 104 deported Indian nationals, including 25 women and 12 minors, landed in Amritsar from San Antonio, Texas. Most of the deportees were reportedly from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Many were apprehended by the US Border Patrol while attempting unlawful entry and had not been residing in the US for long. Security agencies and local police will verify their backgrounds for any criminal records.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the state government would set up assistance counters at the airport for returnees. Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal expressed disappointment over the deportation, highlighting the deportees’ contributions to the US economy and urging for permanent residency considerations.
Dhaliwal announced plans to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss the concerns of Punjabis living in the US. He also advised against illegal migration routes, emphasising legal pathways and skill development for global opportunities.
The deportation follows tighter US immigration policies introduced under former President Donald Trump, which led to increased crackdowns on those using “donkey routes” (illegal migration networks).
