Republican senators appealed to the Biden government to permit the transfer of Poland’s MiG fighter jets to the Ukrainians to fight the Russian attack. The Biden administration had suggested that the Soviet-era planes in NATO ally Poland can be transferred to help provide air support to Ukraine.
But the Pentagon declined to transfer the planes to NATO by handing them off at a US base in Germany. The Pentagon said the planes are not the most effective weapon, and it can run a high risk of escalating the war. The GOP senators rejected the government’s arguments, saying that the US must stand by its commitments and provide Ukraine with what it needs to defend its country.

“We urge you to act without any delay and provide the required airpower that will strengthen the ability of the Ukrainian armed forces to defend their country and save civilian lives,” the senators wrote. The Republican senators ignored the Pentagon’s concern that transferring the planes via NATO will be viewed by Russia at a time when the US is already sending anti-aircraft missiles and other military support to Ukraine.
