Trump admin to impose 15% US tariff on polysilicon, key material for solar panels and chips, as early as Thursday.
According to the sources, which cited four people familiar with the matter, the plan goes beyond just a tariff. The US will also set minimum import prices for polysilicon, wafers, solar cells and finished solar panels.
So even products that clear the price floor could still face the added 15% tariff on top. This kind of combined approach, price floors plus a tariff, is fairly unusual in US trade policy.
The decision follows a year-long national security investigation by the US Commerce Department into polysilicon imports.
While the material is best known for its role in solar panels, it also feeds into chip manufacturing, which is why the administration is treating this as a broader supply chain issue rather than just a solar policy matter.
The timing is tricky for American solar manufacturers. The US has been trying to grow its own solar production, but the same administration has also pulled back federal support for renewable energy.
That leaves domestic manufacturers dealing with new trade protections on one hand and less government backing on the other.
For India, the direct impact looks limited since Indian solar products already face duties above 100% in the American market.
Still, if global polysilicon and wafer prices rise as a result of this move, India could feel it indirectly, since the country relies almost entirely on imports for these materials.
Separately, Indian solar cells and modules already face a preliminary US countervailing duty of around 126%, unrelated to this new polysilicon action.
