The Centre has given in-principle approval to connect the Uttan-Virar Sea Link with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway at Khardi near Virar.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways cleared the interchange for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, closing out an approval that had been stuck since 2023. What changes for commuters is fairly direct.

Vehicles from South Mumbai, including areas like Nariman Point, will eventually be able to reach the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway much faster, routing through the Coastal Road, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Bandra-Versova Sea Link, the Versova-Bhayander corridor and then the Uttan-Virar Sea Link itself.

The sea link project is sizeable in its own right. It runs 55.12 km end to end, split between a 24.35 km main sea bridge and 30.77 km of connector roads across three stretches, the Uttan Link, Vasai Link and Virar Link.

The main bridge alone is expected to become India’s longest once finished. Plans call for six lanes, emergency lanes and an integrated traffic system, with this newly cleared interchange sitting on the Virar Link portion. There’s a freight angle too, and it’s arguably the bigger story.

MMRDA has positioned the sea link as one piece of a larger 120 km coastal corridor linking South Mumbai to Vasai, Virar, Palghar and the upcoming Vadhavan Port, envisioned as one of India’s major deep sea ports.

Quicker road access between the port and the national highway grid could genuinely shift how cargo moves through the region. Nothing has broken ground yet, and the interchange still needs final sign off.

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee summed it up simply: the road connecting the sea link and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is now open, at least on paper. There is still a long way to go before construction begins.
