Uttar Pradesh is considering an investment of Rs 5,500 crore to expand its battery storage infrastructure and improve the reliability of electricity supply.
The proposed plan aims to help the state meet rising power demand and make better use of clean energy, particularly during hours when solar power generation is unavailable.
According to a report published on October 29, 2026, Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited plans to install battery storage systems at six thermal power plants across the state.
The proposed installations will cover Anpara, Obra, Harduaganj, Panki, Parichha and Jawaharpur. Together, these facilities are expected to provide 4,250 megawatt hours of energy storage capacity.
The largest installation is planned at Jawaharpur, with a proposed capacity of 3,200 megawatt hours. The other facilities will have smaller storage systems based on the findings of a feasibility study prepared by IIT Banaras Hindu University.
The batteries will store electricity during periods of lower demand and release it when consumption rises. This could reduce the state’s need to purchase expensive electricity during peak hours.
Solar power generation depends on sunlight, which means it cannot meet electricity demand throughout the day and night on its own. Battery storage can help bridge this gap by making stored electricity available when solar generation falls.
The project forms part of Uttar Pradesh’s longer term power planning. The Central Electricity Authority estimates that the state will need nearly 53,000 megawatt hours of additional energy storage by the financial year 2036.
The proposed investment could strengthen electricity supply, support renewable energy use and improve energy security. However, the plan is still under consideration, and its final impact will depend on project approvals, implementation and operating costs.
If completed successfully, the initiative could help Uttar Pradesh manage growing electricity demand while supporting its transition towards cleaner energy.
