Voltas signs a term sheet with Atomberg Innovation to manufacture AC compressors locally in India, reducing reliance on imported parts.

The joint venture will run on a 50:50 basis and plans to build a manufacturing facility in Chennai, with an initial capacity of around 2.8 million compressors a year.

Voltas will act as the anchor customer, buying a large share of the output, while the venture stays free to sell compressors to other AC brands in the domestic market too.

Compressors are one of the priciest parts inside any air conditioner, and Indian AC makers have leaned on imports to source them for years. This partnership tries to close that gap by building the component locally instead.

The two companies bring different strengths to the table. Voltas already has scale and reach across the Indian room AC market.

Atomberg brings its engineering work on brushless DC motors and smart controller systems, the technology it has built its name on.

On the corporate side, the venture runs on an equal 50:50 shareholding structure with a five-member board. Voltas nominates three directors, Atomberg nominates two.

The announcement lands just after Voltas posted its Q1 FY27 results on 14 August 2026. Consolidated net profit rose to ₹214 crore from ₹140 crore a year earlier, up nearly 52.8%. Revenue for the quarter grew 18.7% year-on-year to ₹4,673.5 crore.

Atomberg has been raising money of its own too. On 17 August 2026, its shareholders approved a fresh issue of ₹450 crore along with a pre-IPO placement of up to ₹90 crore, a sign the company has expansion plans on its end as well.

Both firms still need to finalise definitive agreements and clear regulatory approvals before the Chennai facility moves off paper.
