Wanbury Limited received nine USFDA letters confirming no deficiencies in its Metformin HCL filings, according to an October 16 update.
Wanbury makes active pharmaceutical ingredients, the raw substances that give medicines their effect.
The nine letters cover Metformin HCL, an ingredient used in diabetes drugs. Here is how the process works.
Companies that supply such ingredients to the US file a Drug Master File, a confidential document explaining how the ingredient is made and tested.
The USFDA reads it, and when it finds nothing to fix, it sends a no-deficiency letter. This is a clean paperwork review, not a product approval.
American drug makers that buy the ingredient can refer to these files in their own applications for generic medicines. A clean file can help those reviews move along.
The update follows a tougher stretch. In results reported on 11 August for the three months to June, Wanbury posted revenue of Rs 165.58 crore, up 1.5% from a year earlier.
Profit after tax dropped to Rs 3.24 crore from Rs 13.49 crore. Management pointed to two causes.
Shipping delays linked to the West Asia crisis held back some exports, and the cost of solvents and other crude oil-linked raw materials jumped suddenly.
The company could not pass the full increase on to customers in that quarter. The company also reworked its debt.
It borrowed Rs 205 crore from Axis Finance and Poonawalla Fincorp to replace costlier loans, which cut interest costs from 12.5% to below 10% from 1 July.
On 7 July, 85,20,330 pledged promoter shares were released, equal to 40.65% of the paid-up capital.
Management expects margins and finance costs to improve from the July to September quarter.
It also expects a new manufacturing block at Tanuku in Andhra Pradesh to add to growth in coming quarters.
Wanbury sells to customers in over 50 countries. It runs two USFDA-approved plants, at Tanuku in Andhra Pradesh and Patalganga in Maharashtra.
Metformin sits among its core products, alongside Sertraline and Tramadol. Its next quarterly results will show whether that recovery has begun.
