West Asia Conflict Disrupts Air Cargo from Kochi

Daily cargo movement from the airport has fallen from about 150 tonnes earlier to nearly 60 tonnes now.

The conflict in West Asia has sharply disrupted air cargo movement from Kochi.

Officials from Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) said cargo shipments have dropped by more than half due to flight disruptions in the region. Daily cargo movement from the airport has fallen from about 150 tonnes earlier. Now it is nearly 60 tonnes.

Perishable goods, such as fruits and vegetables, have been the most affected. These items earlier accounted for around 90–100 tonnes of daily cargo, nearly 60% of shipments from the airport.

To clear pending consignments, a special cargo flight from Abu Dhabi is scheduled to arrive at Kochi on Saturday. The flight will transport about 88 tonnes of goods, most of which belong to the Lulu Group.

Officials said the Gulf region remains a major destination for cargo from Kerala. This includes transit shipments to Europe and other Western countries. Moreover, cargo movement is expected to gradually improve as flights to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations resume operations in the coming days.
