Elon Musk is once again reshaping X (formerly Twitter), this time with the launch of XChat β a new private messaging feature aimed at transforming how users connect on the platform. Unveiled over the weekend, XChat introduces end-to-end encrypted messages, vanish mode, file sharing, and both voice and video calling.
In a post on Sunday, Musk described the rollout as βall-new.β It signals a major step toward turning X into a secure and versatile communication hub. He emphasized that XChat uses βBitcoin-style encryptionβ and is built on a completely new architecture. However, technical specifics have not been disclosed.
Currently in beta, XChat is available to select paid subscribers. Screenshots shared by app researchers suggest support for secure group chats and disappearing messages. They also show a four-digit passcode for added privacy β all features typically found on established apps like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram.
This launch isnβt just about messaging. Itβs part of Muskβs broader vision to turn X into a Western βeverything app,β similar to Chinaβs WeChat. That vision includes integrating media, payments, messaging, and even dating. In 2023, Musk told employees that he envisioned X becoming a full-fledged digital bank and dating platform by 2024.
Xβs 600 million monthly users give it a massive advantage. However, keeping them engaged is key. With XChat, Musk is betting that privacy-first tools and richer communication features will not only modernize the platformβs outdated DM system. He also hopes it will deepen user reliance on X for daily interaction.
In the race to build a Western super app, competitors like OpenAIβs Sam Altman are also in the mix. But for now, Muskβs latest move with XChat gives him a notable edge.
