Yes Bank Surges Over 8% on Booming Volume While the ₹8,415 Crore Court Question Looms

Yes Bank
Yes Bank up 8% at the high, with more than twice its usual trading

The stock hit ₹17.55, up 8% at the high, with more than twice its usual trading. Here is what we know, and what to watch next.

Yes Bank is the stock moving on the screens today. Shares were trading at about ₹17.12 in the afternoon, up more than 5.4% from Thursday’s close of ₹16.24, while the Nifty was up under 1%.

A big day, and a big turnaround

Buyers took control early. The stock climbed all the way to ₹17.55, a gain of over 8% at the day’s high, and has held most of that move. Pending buy orders have stayed ahead of sell orders, and the stock has not touched its upper circuit of ₹17.86.

Volumes tell the story. More than 30 crore shares have traded, over twice the stock’s normal pace for this point in the session.

The court ruling still hangs over the bank

The headline risk has not gone away. In October the Supreme Court upheld the Bombay High Court’s order quashing Yes Bank’s 2020 write-off of ₹8,415 crore of AT-1 bonds. In plain terms, the court held that the bonds could not simply be wiped out.

The bank’s CEO has said Yes Bank is examining the verdict and will take appropriate steps in line with legal and regulatory requirements. Bondholders, meanwhile, want a clear repayment plan, including overdue interest, and are reportedly expecting answers at a meeting on 16 November.

Why is it rising?

We looked for a trigger and did not find one. There is no results announcement, order, stake news or regulatory approval dated today, and nothing links the rise to the court case. The cause is unconfirmed, so treat the move as a strong price-and-volume signal, not a reported event.

A possible mover: will Yes Bank push back in court?

The bank has said publicly that it respects the judgment. Reports say a review petition in the Supreme Court is the main option being weighed, with the RBI reportedly considering whether to join the bank in it.

We found no report that a petition has been filed. If one is filed, or if the bank sets out a repayment plan, either could move the stock sharply in either direction. That is the headline to watch.

Where it sits against its 52-week range

At ₹17.12 the stock is about 13% above its 52-week low of ₹15.10, which it touched on 30 October. It is still about 34% below its 52-week high of ₹25.78. Today’s move is a bounce off the bottom of the range, not a breakout towards the top.

What to watch next

  • Whether Yes Bank holds the ₹17 level into the close.
  • Whether the bank files a review petition, and whether the RBI joins it.
  • Any statement from the bank on its plan for the ₹8,415 crore.
  • The bondholders’ meeting reported for 16 November.
