The Government will set up a committee for National Employment Policy (NEP) to increase employment creation in India. Work has also begun to decide the committee members to have representatives from stakeholder ministries, academia, and experts of employers and trade unions.

The policy is assumed to know the jobs expected to be made under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme across a dozen sectors besides the increasing number of gig workforce and platform workers in the country. Last year, some ministers led by former Social Justice & Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot had advised that the NEP should lay out a roadmap with incentives for employment generation.

The restored focus of India’s first NEP began after the Covid-19 pandemic that took away millions of jobs, lifting the overall unemployment rate to alarming levels. Even after 19 months since the pandemic in India, the country’s overall employment is below pre-pandemic levels.
