The death toll from the typhoon that hit the Philippines has surpassed 208 on Monday, the country’s police said. Almost 239 people were injured, and 52 went missing after Typhoon Rai hit the southern and central part of the country, the police added. Over 3 lakh people fled from the Philippines as Rai blasted a super typhoon.

The Philippine Red Cross has reported “complete carnage” in coastal areas. “Homes, hospitals, school and community buildings have been torn to shreds,” Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon said. There has been massive destruction on the Siargao, Dinagat and Mindanao islands which bore the packing wind speeds of 120 miles per hour.

S.O.S was painted on the road in the famous tourist town of General Luna on Siargao Island, as people struggled to find water and food. The affected areas have no communications; electricity also has been struck out, involving the water-refilling stations and ATMs. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte visited some of the hit areas on Saturday and vowed to release two billion pesos (around $40 million) to help in recovery efforts. Thousands of military, police, coast guard and fire personnel have also been deployed to hard-hit areas.
