The online shopping app Meesho announced shutting down its grocery business in India, called Superstore, and the service has been closed. More than 90 per cent of cities in India, except for Nagpur and Mysuru, results in several job less. Nearly 300 employees of Meesho have lost their job after the shuttering of the Meesho Superstore. The company has not commented on the development yet.

In April 2022, Meesho rebranded Farmiso to Superstore, aiming to highlight its continued focus on fulfilling consumer demand for daily essentials in Tier 2 markets and beyond. Also, the company laid off more than 150 employees, mostly from Farmiso, as it aimed to integrate its grocery business within the core application. More than 200 employees are laid off in the social commerce platform during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Low revenue and a high cash burn was the reason behind the startup’s decision to wind up operations in most of the cities,” media reported.

Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra are six states where Meesho Superstore was operational. Recently, Meesho reached 100 million transacting users in 2021 in March. The platform has surged 5.5 times transactions done while the assortment has grown 9X to 72 million during the same period, claimed the company.
