Heavy rain with strong winds hit Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to a depression over the north Andaman Sea, which is predicted to turn into a cyclone by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The depression over the north Andaman Sea strengthened into a deep depression, moving north-northeastwards at 12 km per hour. The weather system, which lay about 110 km east-southeast of Port Blair on the Andaman Islands, was expected to intensify into a cyclone by Monday evening, the IMD said.

But on Tuesday morning, the weather department said that the deep depression over the Andaman Sea has weakened in the next few hours as it moves towards the port city of Thandwe in Myanmar by noon. Cyclonic storm Asani had put rescue teams on alert. Navy and Army were also on standby. Around 150 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed, and six relief camps are opened in different parts of the islands. People living in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been evacuated and sheltered in temporary relief camps in North and Middle Andaman and South Andaman districts.
