As per PLFS, This is the lowest unemployment rate recorded in the past four years since NSO launched India’s first computer-based survey in April 2017.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) results, the unemployment rate in urban areas falls in the fourth quarter. This data is witnessed for April-June 2022, which was released on Wednesday. As per the current weekly status, the unemployment rate in the June quarter has been estimated at 7.6%. This is the bottommost data in the last four years for all ages.

For all ages among men and women, the current weekly status has been estimated at 7.1 and 9.5%, respectively. The rate has shown an unceasing decline since the June 2021 quarter. At that time, it was estimated at 12.6 per cent.

Before these months, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) estimated the country’s unemployment rate in July at 6.80%, from 7.8% in June 2022. The June quarter saw a minimal increase in the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) from 47.3% to 47.5% in the March 2022 quarter.

The female LFPR increased by 0.5 percentage points from 20.4% in January. Similarly, the male LFPR increased slightly from 73.4% in March 2022 to 73.5% in June. The Worker to Population Ratio (WPR) also witnessed a marginal rise of 0.5 percentage points from 43.4% in the March quarter. The female WPR arouse at 18.9% as against the 68.3% for males.

Before the PLFS, the National Sample Survey Organisation, presently known as NSO, which works under the Ministry of Statistics and Implementation, brought the data related to employment and unemployment based on five years household socio-economic survey programme. In April 2017, India’s first computer-based survey was propelled to measure the dynamics in labour force participation and employment status in three months, especially for urban areas only in terms of current weekly status (CWS).
