On Tuesday, Google said it is introducing UPI Autopay as a payment option for subscription purchases on its Play Store in India.

Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India under UPI 2.0, Autopay helps customers make recurring payments using any UPI app that supports the feature. UPI has been available as a payment method on the Google Play Store since 2019.

“By introducing UPI Autopay on the platform, we aim to extend the convenience of UPI to subscription-based purchases, helping more people access useful and enjoyable services – while enabling local developers to grow their subscription-based businesses,’ said the head, Saurabh Agarwal, Retail and payment activation, Google Play, India, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand.

UPI Autopay makes setting up subscriptions easy, the company said in a blog post. After choosing to purchase a subscription plan, users need to click on the payment method in the shopping cart, select “Pay with UPI”, and then approve the purchase in their supported UPI app.

A few weeks ago, Google was fined by India’s anti-competition agency for not allowing developers to provide third-party payment processing services. The Competition Commission of India imposed a fine of Rs 937 crore and immediately halted the company’s business management.
