Shares of a leading competitor in the branded and generic formulations and API arena, Lupin Ltd, were trading 1% higher on 11 August after the company announced launching an emergency kit for the treatment of severe low blood sugar in the United States. 

According to IQVIA data, the medicine category generates an estimated $122 million in sales per year in the United States. Lupin’s ‘Glucagon for injectable USP’ (1mg/vial), supplied in an emergency kit, is a bioequivalent of Eli Lilly’s injectable.

Glucagon is suggested for the treatment of severe hypoglycemia in both children and adults suffering from diabetes. It is also used as a diagnostic tool in gastrointestinal imaging during radiologic examinations of adults.

Lupin has been seeking to build injectables and biosimilars as growth drivers by using its R&D and production expertise. “this year in particular, we’re going to see a material inflection on the injectables front with products like Glucagon, Liraglutide, Risperdal Consta coming to market,” Lupin said in May 2025.

The US FDA has been loosening constraints on developing biologics and the private label market, positioning biosimilars as a future growth driver. The launch is part of Lupin’s injectables pipeline, which includes up to 30 medicines, including biosimilars and inhalations.

At 1:32 pm, the shares of Lupin were trading 1.25% higher at Rs 1,942 on NSE.
