Joint Committee to Present Report in Lok Sabha on Data Protection Bill

Congress Member of Parliament Manish Tewari will present the report on Data Protection Bill in the Lok Sabha. The JPC examining was on December 1 given the sixth extension till the last week of the currently going Winter session to submit its report. The panel had adopted a 250-page report on the Bill on November 22 after about two years of discussions.

The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, was introduced in Lok Sabha on December 11, 2019, by the former Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad. They aimed to protect the personal data of a person and establish a Data Protection Authority.

The 30-member panel was expected to submit its report in the Budget Session of Parliament in February. But panel chairman PP Chaudhary asked for an extension up to the Winter Session of Parliament for the panel to submit its report. That was the fifth time when the committee’s time limit was extended.

The draft of the Bill has been concerned for holding sensitive personal data, responsibilities of data fiduciaries to deploy safeguards, and grievance redressal mechanism. The Bill was proposed after the Supreme Court announced in 2017 that privacy is a fundamental right and mandated the government to develop a data protection authority.
