PM Modi to Launch 5G Services in India on 1st Oct

Narendra Modi - Prime Minister of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the country’s 5G services on October 1 at the India Mobile Congress in Pragati Maidan.

India Mobile Congress (IMC), known as Asia’s largest telecom, media and technology forum, is jointly organized by the Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). IMC 2022, scheduled for October 1-4, will focus on “the evolutionary path of existing technologies and the impact on the future of businesses and individuals through meaningful dialogue.”

Earlier, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India was preparing to roll out 5G services by October. He added that 5G services will scale up after launch and should cover all parts of the country within the next two to three years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about 5G in his Independence Day speech, saying the service will offer ten times faster internet speeds and will be rolled out in India soon. He further stated that fibre would be used in Indian villages, and the internet would soon reach the country’s most remote parts.

In terms of speed, the rule of thumb for 5G is 100 Mbps, but it can vary. The broad consensus on 4G is that it’s in the 60-70 Mbps range.

In addition to high-speed data, 5G has the potential to enable a variety of enterprise-grade solutions, such as machine-to-machine communication, connected vehicles, and more immersive augmented reality and virtual world experiences.

In early August, the Ministry of Telecom received total bids worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore from the spectrum auction. Reliance Jio, Adani group, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are the top four players in the spectrum auction.
