Secretary of State Tony Blinken said that the United States had announced $144 million in aid to the people of Afghanistan who are facing a humanitarian crisis under the Taliban. The support will be given directly to independent international and non-governmental organisations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), International Organization for Migration (IOM), and World Health Organization (WHO).

“This aid will be given to over 18 million exposed Afghans in need in the region, including Afghan refugees in nearby countries,” Blinken said. Including this, the total aid in Afghanistan and its refugees is around $474 million, the most significant amount of support from any nation, he added.

“It will provide Afghanistan protection, food security support, essential healthcare, winterisation assistance, logistics, and emergency food support in rising humanitarian needs happened by lack in healthcare, Covid-19, drought, hunger, and the approaching winter,” Blinken said. “This humanitarian aid will only benefit the people of Afghanistan and not the Taliban, who are still liable for the commitments they have made,” he stated
